{"id":62,"date":"2011-08-11T19:28:00","date_gmt":"2011-08-11T19:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ethanlewis.org\/icarus\/2011\/08\/11\/i-robot\/"},"modified":"2019-03-31T18:48:49","modified_gmt":"2019-03-31T22:48:49","slug":"i-robot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ethanlewis.org\/icarus\/2011\/08\/11\/i-robot\/","title":{"rendered":"I, Robot?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-oE1-sXpOABk\/TkMgIQgbZOI\/AAAAAAAAAEE\/bsnGt2GEi4w\/s1600\/jetsons09.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-oE1-sXpOABk\/TkMgIQgbZOI\/AAAAAAAAAEE\/bsnGt2GEi4w\/s200\/jetsons09.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"142\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0I&#8217;ve always loved science fiction.\u00a0 Full disclosure time here: I just spent hours trying to make my iPad look like a PADD from Star Trek!\u00a0 Anyway, as a young person I spent a lot of time watching <i>Star Trek <\/i> and <i>Jetsons<\/i> reruns.\u00a0\u00a0 To the point that I found it very depressing that we didn&#8217;t have rocket jet packs by the year 2000.\u00a0 Another feature of sci- fi that always interested me was the idea of a future where robots would be our servants and humans would be freed from the mundane aspects of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-1pGCNXD38uY\/TkQgE0VQxKI\/AAAAAAAAAEM\/W47VKS4Aib0\/s1600\/220px-Goodnightvienna.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-1pGCNXD38uY\/TkQgE0VQxKI\/AAAAAAAAAEM\/W47VKS4Aib0\/s200\/220px-Goodnightvienna.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Of course, everyone shared this belief.\u00a0 I mean, Ringo even wanted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.robothalloffame.org\/06inductees\/gort.html\">Gort<\/a> to become the fifth Beatle, if the album cover at left tells us anything.\u00a0 And who can blame him?\u00a0 Everyone wants a piece of famous robots.\u00a0 To people growing up in the 1970&#8217;s, the most compelling characters of the <i>Star Wars<\/i> movies were R2D2 and C3P0.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/beta.hammacher.com\/Product\/Default.aspx?sku=77944\">You can buy a replica R2 unit for yourself<\/a> from high-end retailers, and women can even purchase the most un-sexy bathing suits of all time, if they so choose.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-4CYFNcpLI3o\/TkQkCeKIgsI\/AAAAAAAAAEQ\/hsbT_6_wgNY\/s1600\/R2JKDKJK.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-4CYFNcpLI3o\/TkQkCeKIgsI\/AAAAAAAAAEQ\/hsbT_6_wgNY\/s320\/R2JKDKJK.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"195\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">But let&#8217;s be honest: to be able to delegate mundane tasks to a robot just makes so much sense.\u00a0 This, of course, is why modern industrial robots (<a href=\"http:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/automaton\/robotics\/industrial-robots\/041410-world-robot-population\">and there are over 8 million of them<\/a>) have increased manufacturing efficiency (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.popsci.com\/technology\/article\/2010-10\/robots-are-stealing-american-jobs-economists-say\">at the cost of jobs for real humans, of course<\/a>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">I&#8217;ve been particularly interested in this since my first visit to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.subaru-sia.com\/qtvr\/index.htm\">Subaru plant in Lafayette, Indiana<\/a> in the early &#8217;90&#8217;s. First of all, if you have the chance to go to a car factory, you really should.\u00a0 They are massive places, and you can actually watch a car go from random pieces of metal to driving out the door.\u00a0 And besides the overhead conveyor belts carrying automobile carcasses through the facility, there are lots of really cool robots doing painting, assembly, welding and other tasks.\u00a0 Ever since, I wondered when smaller robots would come to our aid around the home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">And then, a couple of years later, they proliferated!\u00a0 The first one I heard of was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=robot%20pool&amp;sourceid=mozilla2&amp;ie=utf-8&amp;oe=utf-8#pq=robot%20pool%20cleaner&amp;hl=en&amp;cp=6&amp;gs_id=g&amp;xhr=t&amp;q=robotic+pool+cleaner&amp;qe=cm9ib3RpIHBvb2wgY2xlYW5lcg&amp;qesig=__dkMuZw2IF6422pfjs0ew&amp;pkc=AFgZ2tly4vTHKrb5HgL4naLNMpsf-TQ2Lo6LTGUiAp3L8yOW6yFSQ6YCBAJwSHdBJxnwyuJeA7Wf0OcsHRa8NK535qwPwAI9qQ&amp;pf=p&amp;sclient=psy&amp;safe=off&amp;source=hp&amp;pbx=1&amp;oq=roboti+pool+cleaner&amp;aq=0c&amp;aqi=g-c5&amp;aql=&amp;gs_sm=&amp;gs_upl=&amp;bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&amp;fp=ab1e19453cb44ea3&amp;biw=1146&amp;bih=728\">robotic swimming pool cleaner<\/a>. These little chaps walk along the bottom of your pool (under water) and clean it for you.\u00a0\u00a0 Then came <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=robot%20vacuum&amp;sourceid=mozilla2&amp;ie=utf-8&amp;oe=utf-8\">the robot vacuum cleaner<\/a>, which can be programmed to sweep your floors, and even moves around your furniture.\u00a0 Considering that vacuuming has always been one of my household chores, this seems very intriguing.\u00a0 Plus, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DmXvCPWbnAw&amp;feature=related\">it could give the cats some amusement<\/a>&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-rkRrQVnSvkg\/TkQnEqq-1hI\/AAAAAAAAAEU\/xL4lXiWJ3As\/s1600\/Picture+1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-rkRrQVnSvkg\/TkQnEqq-1hI\/AAAAAAAAAEU\/xL4lXiWJ3As\/s200\/Picture+1.png\" width=\"200\" height=\"135\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Since the <a href=\"http:\/\/thesassylibrarian.blogspot.com\/\">Sassy Librarian<\/a> and I bought to our dream house, I have come to love the process of mowing the lawn&#8211;something I had never done before we moved here.\u00a0 I love riding around on my lawn tractor and I look forward all week to getting some &#8220;seat time&#8221;.\u00a0 But what if&#8212;I mean, you don&#8217;t think&#8211;oh my!\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=robot%20lawnmower&amp;sourceid=mozilla2&amp;ie=utf-8&amp;oe=utf-8#hl=en&amp;safe=off&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=0h1DTt2ZIc_AgQelqtS8CQ&amp;ved=0CCgQBSgA&amp;q=robot+lawn+mower&amp;spell=1&amp;bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&amp;fp=ab1e19453cb44ea3&amp;biw=1146&amp;bih=728\">They make robot lawnmowers now, too<\/a>!\u00a0 They wouldn&#8217;t work on our property (too much land) but for a typical suburban house, this would be unbelievably awesome. I&#8217;m sure it won&#8217;t be long before a professional sports team fires their head groundskeeper and replaces him with one of these babies.\u00a0 I can hear the announcers talking now: &#8220;The umpires just consulted with the Robot Lawnmower to see what the rain forecast is.&#8221;\u00a0 The future is right around the corner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">So just as I had begun to think that there were very few jobs left that were safe from robots, I almost drove my car off the road when I saw a billboard promoting the local hospital&#8217;s new service: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wvhcs.org\/RoboticSurgery\/Pages\/Robotic%20Surgery.aspx\">Robotic Hysterectomies<\/a>.\u00a0 At first I scoffed, in my typical <a href=\"http:\/\/www.people.com\/people\/archive\/issue\/0,,7566790827,00.html\">Phil Donahue feminist<\/a> style, &#8220;I bet you won&#8217;t find them doing robot vasectomies.&#8221; But apparently the hospital uses robots for lots of other procedures, too, including some that only apply to men.\u00a0 The surgeries actually employ a human doctor to operate the robot, but still, it just sounds so unpleasant.\u00a0 I mean, if I was going to go have a major organ removed, I would prefer that a person was responsible, not a machine.\u00a0 And what if you got a robot with problems, like <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marvin_the_Paranoid_Android\">Marvin, the Paranoid Android<\/a>?
