font-size: 12pt;\">I had a small realization the other day that blew my mind.\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/thesassylibrarian.blogspot.com\/\">Sassy Librarian<\/a> and I were watching one of our favorite movies, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0041716\/\">On The Town<\/a>&#8220;, a 1949 Gene Kelly-Stanley Donen musical about three naive sailors given 24 hours shore leave in postwar New York City.\u00a0 They don&#8217;t have much time to see the sights (and find some girls) but they manage to do all of that and more, along with great songs and genuinely funny slapstick humor.\u00a0\u00a0 One of the sailors (&#8220;Chip&#8221;) is played by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000069\/\">Frank Sinatra<\/a>, who in the course of the movie falls in love with a vivacious lady taxi driver (&#8220;Brunhilde Esterhazy&#8221;) played by the late <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0308081\/\">Betty Garrett<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">It occurred to me that when I think of Betty Garrett, I don&#8217;t think of her as the singing, dancing star of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0&#8217;40&#8217;s and &#8217;50&#8217;s musicals, or as the longtime <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0662972\/\">wife of blacklisted actor Larry Parks<\/a>;<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-qt4vzZjZSq4\/TiBjgUjhn_I\/AAAAAAAAADc\/x9anOeTbf7g\/s1600\/ls_thumb%255B4%255D.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-qt4vzZjZSq4\/TiBjgUjhn_I\/AAAAAAAAADc\/x9anOeTbf7g\/s200\/ls_thumb%255B4%255D.jpg\" width=\"170\" height=\"200\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-NV60xTUMuX8\/TiBjYw_5aII\/AAAAAAAAADY\/1RSYQwUHlBs\/s1600\/on_the_town.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-NV60xTUMuX8\/TiBjYw_5aII\/AAAAAAAAADY\/1RSYQwUHlBs\/s200\/on_the_town.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"137\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>instead I think of her from the 1970&#8217;s sitcoms she acted in when I was a kid.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think of &#8220;Hildy&#8221; from on the town, as much as I think of Laverne and Shirley&#8217;s landlady Edna Babish.\u00a0 This makes a certain amount of sense.\u00a0 After all, they say that &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=first%20impressions%20are%20lasting&amp;sourceid=mozilla2&amp;ie=utf-8&amp;oe=utf-8#sclient=psy&amp;hl=en&amp;safe=off&amp;source=hp&amp;q=%22first+impressions+are+lasting+impressions%22+&amp;aq=f&amp;aqi=g2g-v1g-j1&amp;aql=&amp;oq=&amp;pbx=1&amp;bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&amp;fp=7d74efdf02a5a3a9&amp;biw=1093&amp;bih=734\">first impressions are lasting impressions<\/a>&#8221; and I was an avid viewer of tv and movies when I was young.\u00a0 But I realize that people of, say, my parents&#8217; generation, would think of Betty Garrett as she was when she was young.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-VZM5f08uisw\/TiBlThwpaLI\/AAAAAAAAADg\/Z1bSFGHM3IQ\/s1600\/frank-sinatra-tom-selleck-1987.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-VZM5f08uisw\/TiBlThwpaLI\/AAAAAAAAADg\/Z1bSFGHM3IQ\/s200\/frank-sinatra-tom-selleck-1987.jpg\" width=\"160\" height=\"200\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-9QEQmllZqJI\/TiBlwL55I9I\/AAAAAAAAADk\/kF_esSRoGT8\/s1600\/sinatra.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-9QEQmllZqJI\/TiBlwL55I9I\/AAAAAAAAADk\/kF_esSRoGT8\/s200\/sinatra.jpg\" width=\"182\" height=\"200\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Honestly, my image of Frank Sinatra is similarly confused.\u00a0 To me growing up, <a href=\"http:\/\/snltranscripts.jt.org\/90\/90qsinatra.phtml\">Sinatra was an old, bloated former star who had a suspect relationship with Nancy Reagan<\/a> and made a noteworthy guest appearance on Magnum, P.I.\u00a0 But, of course, when Ol&#8217; Blue Eyes guested on Magnum in 1987, it was the last of 61 acting credits he racked, up, not to mention being one of the most famous and iconic singers of the WWII era.\u00a0 Clearly, my grandparents would think of Sinatra as he looked when THEY were young, not as he did at the end of his life.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-0mnCGPmkY_M\/TiBm2RvqFvI\/AAAAAAAAADo\/kiS5mJij8SY\/s1600\/1101850527_400.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-0mnCGPmkY_M\/TiBm2RvqFvI\/AAAAAAAAADo\/kiS5mJij8SY\/s200\/1101850527_400.jpg\" width=\"151\" height=\"200\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><a style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-K3h_vlJqJlQ\/TiBnhEpH1LI\/AAAAAAAAADs\/sU2fPKRAMKY\/s1600\/madonna3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-K3h_vlJqJlQ\/TiBnhEpH1LI\/AAAAAAAAADs\/sU2fPKRAMKY\/s200\/madonna3.jpg\" width=\"173\" height=\"200\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">So, now that I&#8217;m getting old, it makes me think about stars of my youth.\u00a0 For instance, when I was growing up <a href=\"http:\/\/allaboutmadonna.com\/madonna-interviews-articles\/time-may-27-1985\">in the 1980&#8217;s Madonna was a huge star<\/a>.\u00a0 She also came out with a new look in every video for her songs, and continually pushed the limits of decency and sexiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a style=\"clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-GAtxTroOH9Y\/TiBpO1AB1oI\/AAAAAAAAADw\/h3Y536DM768\/s1600\/Madonna-and-her-daughter--001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-GAtxTroOH9Y\/TiBpO1AB1oI\/AAAAAAAAADw\/h3Y536DM768\/s200\/Madonna-and-her-daughter--001.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"120\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0 When I think of Madonna, I automatically think of her from her mid-1980&#8217;s heyday.\u00a0 But Madonna has continued her career, to the point now where she has recorded in four different decades, along with writing books, acting and being a celebrity (especially in Britain, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/celebritynews\/6253335\/Madonna-please-dont-call-me-Madge.html\">where they love to call her &#8220;Madge&#8221;<\/a>, to her lasting displeasure).\u00a0 Do kids today think of her as she was, or <a href=\"http:\/\/madonnarevelations.blogspot.com\/search\/label\/muscle%20madness\">as a muscle-bound old lady<\/a>?\u00a0 Or just as Lourdes&#8217; mom?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Thought provoking, no?\u00a0 How&#8217;s this?\u00a0 What will the children of today&#8217;s kids think of when they see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=lady+gaga&amp;hl=en&amp;safe=off&amp;prmd=ivnsuol&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=isch&amp;ei=umkgTq2sAozpgQfU4uHkBQ&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=mode_link&amp;ct=mode&amp;cd=2&amp;ved=0CBQQ_AUoAQ&amp;biw=1093&amp;bih=734#hl=en&amp;safe=off&amp;tbm=isch&amp;sa=1&amp;q=%22lady+gaga%22&amp;oq=%22lady+gaga%22&amp;aq=f&amp;aqi=g10&amp;aql=&amp;gs_sm=e&amp;gs_upl=1995l4371l0l4814l2l2l0l0l0l0l812l1053l2-1.6-1l2&amp;bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&amp;fp=be15c174956bee1a&amp;biw=1093&amp;bih=734\">this 21st century star<\/a>?<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both;
