{"id":45,"date":"2012-09-04T13:32:00","date_gmt":"2012-09-04T13:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ethanlewis.org\/icarus\/2012\/09\/04\/my-tip-to-the-democrats\/"},"modified":"2019-04-01T10:40:39","modified_gmt":"2019-04-01T14:40:39","slug":"my-tip-to-the-democrats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ethanlewis.org\/icarus\/2012\/09\/04\/my-tip-to-the-democrats\/","title":{"rendered":"My Tip to the Democrats&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">So tonight is the first night of the quadrennial multi-day event known as the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laff-A-Lympics\"><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Laff-A-Lympics <\/span><\/a>Democratic National Convention. \u00a0In typical fashion, the mistakes began well before the convention ever started&#8212;by scheduling the convention of the party of labor in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/2012\/08\/30\/3487994\/despite-some-concerns-union-members.html\">&#8220;right to work&#8221; state, with the lowest labor union membership in the nation.<\/a>\u00a0 Anyway, in the spirit of generosity for which I am known, I would like to offer some suggestions to the Democrats for how they can best carry out a successful convention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Please understand that this is offered in a spirit of non-partisanship. \u00a0I am not a member of, nor do I affiliate with, either the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.democrats.org\/\">Democratic<\/a> or the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gop.com\/meet-americas-comeback-team\/\">Republican<\/a> parties (isn&#8217;t it interesting that the Democratic web domain is .org, and the Republican is .com?) But out of concern for the common weal, I have a simple suggestion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">To have the best possible result from this week&#8217;s convention, the Democrats should tell the truth. \u00a0All the time. \u00a0And nothing but the truth. \u00a0Now obviously, &#8220;truth&#8221; is a somewhat subjective thing. \u00a0Sometimes, people can have reasonable disagreements about what is true. \u00a0But other things are objectively true <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/blogs\/politics\/2012\/09\/fact-check-paul-ryans-jimmy-carter-comments\/\">such as the declining number of business bankruptcies over the last two years, despite the claim by Rep. Ryan that there were over 1 million<\/a>. \u00a0Similarly, it is commonplace to accept the idea that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=politicians+lie&amp;sugexp=chrome,mod=7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8#hl=en&amp;sclient=psy-ab&amp;q=%22politicians+lie%22&amp;oq=%22politicians+lie%22&amp;gs_l=serp.3..0i7l2j0j0i7i30.4984.6792.0.7193.2.2.0.0.0.0.178.265.1j1.2.0.les%3B..0.0...1c.RLVhNAm7gv8&amp;pbx=1&amp;bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&amp;fp=c7ffae000149fd00&amp;biw=1241&amp;bih=651\">politicians lie all the time<\/a>. And whether the lie is actively spoken, such as \u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=politicians+lie&amp;sugexp=chrome,mod=7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8#hl=en&amp;sclient=psy-ab&amp;q=%22i+did+not+have+sexual+relations+with+that+woman+miss+lewinsky%22&amp;oq=%22i+did+not+have+sexual+relations+with+that+woman+miss+lewinsky%22&amp;gs_l=serp.3..0i30l3.3535.9495.5.9768.2.2.0.0.0.0.168.329.0j2.2.0.les%3B..0.0...1c.zvZaH_uXhA0&amp;pbx=1&amp;bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&amp;fp=c7ffae000149fd00&amp;biw=1241&amp;bih=651\">I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky&#8221;<\/a>, or merely a result of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=%22mission+accomplished%22+iraq&amp;aq=f&amp;sugexp=chrome,mod=7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\">giving a speech in front of a misleading &#8220;Mission Accomplished&#8221; sign<\/a>, it is still a lie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">And I suspect that the widespread belief that politicians lie is a major reason for the l<a href=\"http:\/\/www.infoplease.com\/ipa\/A0781453.html\">ow turnout at elections<\/a>. \u00a0If that is true, it stands to reason that it might help some politicians separate themselves from the herd if they simply told the truth.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><a style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\" href=\"http:\/\/media.salon.com\/2012\/08\/romney_ryan_rect-460x307.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media.salon.com\/2012\/08\/romney_ryan_rect-460x307.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">And after last week&#8217;s Republican Convention, that would be even more dramatic. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=republican+convention+lies&amp;aq=f&amp;sugexp=chrome,mod=7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8#hl=en&amp;sclient=psy-ab&amp;q=republican+convention+lies+ryan&amp;oq=republican+convention+lies+ryan&amp;gs_l=serp.3...66408.67440.0.67943.5.5.0.0.0.0.153.503.3j2.5.0.les%3B..0.0...1c.Z5p9YvmyhJY&amp;pbx=1&amp;bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&amp;fp=c7ffae000149fd00&amp;biw=1241&amp;bih=651\">Talk is widespread <\/a>that several speakers, particularly Rep. Ryan lied brazenly and shamelessly without any concern for the truth. And certainly several of Gov.
