*************************************
For this
project you will be divided into three (bell 6) or four (bell 4)
groups. For the simulation you will pretend to be residents of a
small midwestern city in the year 1898.
Welcome
to
Lewis
City,
Illinois. Located just 10 miles outside of the growing city of
Chicago, Lewis City has itself grown from a small farming community
of a few dozen families into a bustling town of 3,000. We are
fortunate to have a “little bit of everything” here in
Lewis City, from farms to factories, native-born Americans to
immigrants, and income levels ranging from rich to poor.
The
town council
(headed by the Mayor, Mr. Lewis) will be sending a resolution to our
Senators, expressing the opinions of the town of Lewis City over the
topic of the annexation of the Philippines. We will have a
town meeting TUESDAY at which
citizens will present their best
arguments to the council. Then the council will decide which
argument makes the most sense for 1) America and 2) Lewis City. Later
we will tell our Senators what our opinion is.
The
town meeting
will follow the following order. First, the group presenting Option
1—Fulfill Our National Destiny will give us their
pro-imperialist position. Second, the group presenting Option
2—Preserve Our Democratic Values will give us the
anti-imperialist view. Finally, the group presenting Option
3—Carefully Calculate Our Interests will suggest a compromise
position.
Each
group will
have a maximum of ten (10) minutes to make a presentation. Each member
of the group
will be expected to speak. The material in the briefing book is all
that will be required to prepare your remarks, but feel free to use the
textbook as a source as well. Good luck, and may
the best position win. God Bless America and God Bless Lewis City!
