Weekly Syllabus

Week of Monday, February 1 through Friday, February 5

This week we will look at little more closely at some aspects of America after the Civil War.

Also, your cause of the Civil War paper is due on Friday. We will spend some time talking about that this week--make sure to conference if you have any concerns.

Monday, February 1, 2010--(40 minutes)

Topic: Discussion of expectations for the Civil War paper.

Homework: In class today I will give you a handout about race relations in the South after the Civil War and the violence that took place there. Tonight you need to read the handout and write a short essay (approximately one page) on the Ning in which you answer the following questions:

    • as far as you can tell what kinds of words or deeds could provoke lynchings?
    • how would you have felt if you were an African-American living in the South during this time period? Would you have been able to count on the protection of law enforcement officers and the judicial system?
