Monday, August 26, 2013 (30 minutes)

Topic:  Brief description of class and Mr. Lewis.
Homework: Make sure that you've acquired the textbook. Write a short essay about the person in American history who interests you the most, and why. The essay should be written on the class online forum, which will be demonstrated in class.


Tuesday, August 27, 2013 (50 minutes)

Topic: Lecture on themes that will recur throughout the course: westward migration; regional conflict; racial conflict; economic conflict; America's role in the world; American exceptionalism.

Discussion of textbook and how to make the best use of it throughout the school year.

Homework: Read A People and a Nation pp. 919-920 (Clinton's Victory); 920 (Clinton and the "new Democrats")-923 (Clinton's Diplomacy).


Wednesday, August 28, 2013 (40 minutes)

Topic: Discussion of last night's reading.  Remember that participation is a major part of your grade!

Homework: Read AP&AN pp. 925-926; 928 (The Contested Election of 2000)-932 (Election of 2004).


Thursday, August 29, 2013 (45 minutes)

Topic: Discussion of reading. Let's try to build on yesterday's class and continue participating and trying to draw connections between the reading and current events.

Homework: Read AP&AN pp. 934-937 (Barack Obama); 938 (Americans in the First Decade of the New Millennium)-942 (Medicine, Science and Religion).


Friday, August 30, 2013 (40 minutes)

Quiz: on the recent reading.

Topic: Introduction to this weekend's homework assignment. We will also spend some time discussing note taking strategies.

Homework: You will read an article in a reputable news source and summarize it, while relating it to something that we read this week. The paper should be no more than 2 pages long, and it is due on the class forum by the start of class on Monday.
