Extra Credit

You may earn extra credit points by reading historical novels and preparing a book report on the material. The books do not have to deal with material we have already covered. For instance, you may read a book about the 1980's while we are studying the Civil War.

Please see me before you begin your book report, as I will want to know in advance some information about the book. Also, the school librarians will come in periodically to discuss relevant books that you could use for extra credit.

Each book report can earn you the equivalent of two quizzes on your trimester grade. There is a limit of two extra credit projects per term.

To successfully earn the extra credit points, you must write a short (3 pages) paper in which you describe the book, place it in its historical context, and analyze the author's use of historical research. You will have to assess whether the book seems historically accurate, and whether or not it should be read by your classmates. Expect to revise the paper two to three times before earning the credit. Finally, you will need to present your findings to the class by giving a brief oral report.
