Weekly Syllabus

Week of Monday, December 14 through Friday, December 18


This week we will finish our discussion about school desegregation and move onto a look at some school related First Amendment cases. I have postponed your Supreme Court Justice bios until the Monday night when we return (January 4th). You will have a different writing project this week. We will also study three different cases. We will be busy, but when it's over you'll have 16 days off.


Monday, December 14, 2009 (45 min)

Topic:  Discussion of the reading.

Homework: Writing assignment as described in class. It will be due on the Ning at 11pm.

 

Tuesday, December 15, 2009 (50 min)

Topic: Discussion of the written assignment. Introduction to the First Amendment.
Homework: We will begin our focus of the First Amendment by looking at cases related to student speech. Please read Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District (1969). Kapolka, Saba, P. McMullan and Wallace will read the majority decision and concurrance. Kopervas, M. McMullan, Ruane, and Louis will read the dissents. Everybody should read the syllabus page.
 

Wednesday, December 16, 2009 (45 min)

Topic: Discussion of the reading.

Homework: Read Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier (1987) Kopervas, M. McMullan, Ruane, and Louis will read the majority decision and concurrance. Kapolka, Saba, P. McMullan and Wallace will read the dissents. Everybody should read the syllabus page.

 

Thursday, December 17, 2009 (40 min)

Topic: Discussion of the reading.

Topic: Discussion. Why do you think that understanding of the scope of students First Amendment rights have changed over time? Also, a chance to update me on your progress for the Supreme Court Justices paper.
