Week of Monday, February 1 through Friday, February 5


This week we will get back into our study of significant cases by looking at Gideon v. Wainwright (which established the right to an attorney) and Hustler Magazine v. Falwell which clarified First Amendment rights of writers when charged with libel of noteworthy public personages. We will also take a detour into a look at copyright law and begin our study of cases that had major significance for Presidential politics.


Monday, February 1, 2010 (40 minutes)

Tuesday, February 2, 2010 (50 minutes)

Topic: Discussion of Falwell case.

Homework: Read the US Copyright Code

 

Wednesday, February 3, 2010 (45 minutes)

 

Topic: Understanding copyright law, especially the Fair Use Doctrine.

Homework: Read Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music

 

 

Thursday, February 4, 2010 (50 minutes)

Topic: More on copyright. Discussion of the reading.

Homework: Begin reading New York Times v. US

 

Friday, February 5, 2010 (45 min)

Topic: Discussion of the reading.

Homework: Enjoy your long weekend. By Tuesday you should have read New York Times v. US . It is only about 25 pages long. Try to make sure that your notes indicate HOW each Justice voted and why.
