Week of Monday, November 28  through Friday, December 2


Welcome to the class! In The American Century: Sport History we will study some of the major issues of American history during the post-World War II period through the lens of professional and amateur sports. This class will require you do do lots of writing, including some assigned essays, weekly blog posts and a term paper due on the final day of class.  Please plan to allocate time every night to work on this class. 

This is a new class for me and for Sem.  Together we will be pioneers figuring out how to best make this class a success.  I look forward to working with you on this.  Let's have fun!


Monday, November 28, 2011 (40 min)

Topic:  Brief description of class and Mr. Lewis.  Demonstration of class forum.

Homework: Complete the registration on the class forum (http://ethanlewis.ning.com) as necessary.

Write the essay on the Ning.

 

Tuesday, November 29, 2011 (45 min)

Topic: Discussion of last night's essays.  Introduction to blogging from Mrs. Lewis.

Wednesday, November 30, 2011 (40 min)

Topic: Our first major topic will be racial and gender integration of sports from the period 1945 to the present.  We will have some background info today in class.

Homework: Read handouts.  Be prepared to discuss these in class on Friday.

 

Thursday, December 1, 2011 (50 min)

Topic: Discussion of the reading. Watching some of the Jackie Robinson Story.
Homework:  Finish reading handout. Write a short piece on the Ning summarizing what you think were some main points about your article.
 

Friday, December 2, 2011 (45 min)

Topic: Discussion of the reading. We can carry this over to Monday if necessary.

Homework: Complete your blog post.  Read the articles "From Basketball to Baseball..."  and "Professional Athletes Question Arizona Law" about Arizona's controversial immigration law and the reaction to it by athletes.  Do further research as necessary.  For your blog post, please write something related to the topics we studied in class this week.  You can be creative here.  But make sure that you are discussing issues of race or ethnicity in sports and society.
