Weekly Syllabus

Week of Monday, September 5 through Friday, September 9


This week we will spend more time studying the Red Scare of the 1950's. When doing the reading this week, you might benefit from doing some background reading in the old version of A People and a Nation.

Your first writing assignment is due at 10pm on Tuesday night.  You should plan to write a response to your classmates' essays by 10pm Wednesday night.


Monday, September 5, 2011 (45 minutes)

Topic: “Who lost China?” and the Soviet acquisition of nuclear technology.

Homework: Work on your assignment.


Tuesday, September 6, 2011 (40 minutes)

Topic:  The Hiss Case.  Also, anti-Communism at home in the 1940's and 1950's

Homework: Your assignment is due on the Ning tonight at 11pm. 

 

 

Wednesday, September 7, 2011 (50 minutes)

Topic: Debriefing and feedback for the first written assignment. Discussion of how to write a response. The election of 1948.

Homework: Read the History Study Center overview about McCarthyism

 

Thursday, September 8, 2011 (45 minutes)

Topic: Discussion of the reading. Introduction to second writing assignment.

Homework: Read the handout about McCarthy. Work on writing assignment, due by 11:00 pm on Monday.

 

Friday, September 9, 2011 (45 minutes)

Topic: Atomic fears and the development of the H Bomb.
Homework: Work on your assignment.
