Tuesday, September 1, 2009 (30 minutes)

Topic:  Brief description of class and Mr. Lewis.  Demonstration of class forum.
Homework: Complete the registration on the class forum (http://ethanlewis.ning.com) Read the handouts (Henry Luce "The American Century" pp. 167-171; David Oshinsky, A Conspiracy So Immense, pp. 85-100).
 

Wednesday, September 2, 2009 (50 minutes)

Topic: Information about the databases, and how we will use our class forum. Discussion of the reading. Yalta, Postdam, and other background on the Cold War.
Homework: Reading about President Truman and the beginning of the Cold War. For background purposes, you can consult the RED version of A People and a Nation (APAN-RED) pp. 760-761; 770-774. See me if you don't have a copy of this book.
 

Thursday, September 3, 2009 (45 minutes)

Topic: Discussion of the reading. Introduction to first writing assignment.
Homework: Work on writing assignment, due by 11:00 pm on Sunday.
 

Friday, September 4, 2009 (40 minutes)

Topic: “Who lost China?” and the Soviet acquisition of nuclear technology.
Homework: Work on your assignment. Reading TBA.
