Excellent (A- to A+)

No grammar, spelling or formatting errors. Well-constructed paragraphs and and sentences.

Multiple useful sources have been consulted in the preparation of the paper. Sources are accurately and properly cited using Chicago style.

This paper demonstrates substantial engagement with, and understanding of, the topic. It could be given to U.S. History students as a source.

Very Good (B- to B+)

Very few grammar, spelling or formatting errors. Paragraph structure is good, but the paper could use some better organization.

Multiple useful sources have been consulted, but further research may be indicated. A good-faith effort was made to cite sources, but some errors are apparent.

This paper demonstrates thorough familiarity with, and understanding of, the topic. It presents clear evidence of thoughtful study.

Satisfactory (C- to C+)

Multiple grammar, spelling or formatting errors. Paper seems to have been hastily written with little effort made to proofread it. Poor paragraph structure results in a confusing, hard to understand paper.

More sources should have been consulted, or the sources listed have been misunderstood. Citation format is incorrect.

This paper demonstrates adequate, though limited familiarity with, and understanding of, the topic. Further research seems necessary.

Unsatisfactory (D- to D+)

Multiple grammar, spelling AND formatting errors. Poorly written, hard to follow paper seems to have been the result of no apparent effort.

Seemingly very little research was done. The sources are disreputable, or suspect, or do not say what you think they do. Citations are not present.

This paper does not demonstrate sufficient understanding of the topic.
